What Is the “Great Dark Spot” of Neptune? 🌀🔵 #space #astronomy #universe #cosmos #nasa #neptune

The Great Dark Spot was a massive, Earth-sized storm on Neptune, first discovered in 1989 by the Voyager 2 spacecraft. Similar in appearance to Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, it surprised scientists by forming on an icy, distant planet — and then vanishing entirely just a few years later. 🌀❓

Unlike long-lived storms on Jupiter, Neptune’s dark spots seem temporary and turbulent, possibly because of its dynamic atmosphere and extremely fast winds — the fastest in the solar system, clocking in at over 2,000 km/h! 🌬️🌊

Since Voyager, the Hubble Space Telescope has spotted new dark spots forming and disappearing on Neptune, helping researchers learn about:

Storm formation and dissipation

Heat flow inside gas giants

Neptune’s complex weather patterns

Atmospheric chemistry on ice giants 🌫️🔍

These mysterious storms reveal just how wild and changeable the outer solar system really is.
