Figured I'd rope you in with that fun fact. It's 8 bucks for a daily pass which I think is a fair price to pay, but make sure you get a reservation early because this place sells out fast.
Located just southeast of Amarillo TX the park offers over 30 miles of scenic trails. I will say if you're only interested in downhill or enduro style riding, then you probably won't love this place. While there are lots of fun little downhill sections, they are usually met with an even more challenging technical climb. I did no research before showing up here and wanted the trails to be a surprise, and that might have been a mistake because we started our first ride out on the Black Diamond "Lower Commanche" going south to north. Or should I say our first hike? When I initially heard about the elevation here, I assumed it was a long climb to the top, then an arousing downhill, but it was more like a sine wave. A very fun sine wave, but I was quickly humbled and reminded of my less than average physique. After lower commanche we decided to descend down rock garden, and this was a more traditional descent. With these being the only two black diamond trails, we started hitting up the blues, and these are really fun blues!
I rode solo the second day, and decided to tackle upper commanche to lower commanche north to south which is about 6.5 miles one way. This was a beautiful and challenging ride with a wide variety of terrain. Flowy in spots, good tech, steep climbs, sharp descents that keep you on your toes, this trail had it all. After heading back north on some flowy greens, I wanted to give the blue Givens, Spicer, and Lowry trail a go. Yet another beautifully scenic 3 miles on the other side of the park from Commanche. I then headed back to the van on the lighthouse trail to wrap up this short trip to Palo Duro.
This was a really fun and unique experience here in Texas, and it will definetly test your physical fitness. I totally wasn't prepared for it, but now I know what to expect if I'm ever back there. The trails are fun, but don't have any epic features that you may find at a mountain bike specific trail system. Still an impressive multi use trail system with lots to explore. Like I said earlier, if you only care about downhill then this probably isn't the spot for you, but if you're into pedalling long miles and being treated to some of the best scenery in Texas, then I would highly recommend coming here.
