Toyota GR Yaris First Drive - Overhyped???

Yes, I finally got to drive it. For months, I've sat on the sidelines and watched other content creators wax lyrical about how good the new Toyota GR Yaris is, and all I could is use my imagination to feel like what it must be like to drive this three cylinder pocket rocket.

Thanks to a lot of patience and being in the right place at the right time, I finally got behind the wheel of one of the most talked about cars in quite some time. It may say Yaris on the back, but this is so far removed from the car your gran drives that on the exterior it only shares the lights, wing mirrors roof fin antenna and the wheelbase. Everything else is completely different and is more rally sport than grocery shopping.

It's powered by a 1.6 litre, three cylinder petrol engine that is good for 261hp along with 360Nm of torque, which is fed to all four wheels via a 6-speed manual gearbox. You also get two limited slip differentials if you pay for the Circuit Pack, and why wouldn't you? Starting from £33,250 it also offers 18" forged 18” BBS Forged Alloys wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport4S tyres, circuit tuned suspension, red brake callipers. That’s on top of other features including keyless entry, adaptive cruise control, reversing camera, 8” touchscreen with DAB radio, bluetooth and smartphone connectivity, and dual zone climate control.

If you do want one you'll be waiting a while as demand has been understandably very high. So much so that Toyota has recently opened up an official waiting list and you’ll be waiting at least 18 months for one.

0-62 is dealt with in just 5.5 seconds, and the top speed is electronically limited to 142mph. There's 3 modes on offer; Normal, Sport and Track. Normal sends 60% of the power to the front, with 40% going to the rear, Sport sees 70% go to the rear and 30% sent to the front, whilst Track keeps things nice and neutral with a 50/50 split.

The thing is, is the GR Yaris REALLY that good, or is it overhyped???
