Other Mushrooms Are Bad News

A mushroom in a truffle orchard is rarely good news.
Truffles partner with the fine feeder roots of host trees. So do plenty of other fungi. Every mushroom fruiting above ground may mean another fungus is competing for the same root space below. Two types matter. Saprophytes feed on dead organic matter and are mostly harmless. Mycorrhizal competitors like Hebeloma and Scleroderma actively steal root partnerships from Tuber melanosporum.
I run soil pH at 7.5 to 8.3 across 2 hectares of French oak at 612 metres elevation in the Macedon Ranges, Victoria. High pH is one of the main biological defences in a truffle orchard, suppressing many competing native fungi.
The brûlé under the tree is the fungal sign you actually want. Not mushrooms next to it.
