Roof Tree Removal Rope Hack

You see a guy standing on a roof, carefully sawing through a tree branch while a rope is tied to it. This is not just a random DIY project — it is a calculated, safety-first operation for removing trees that have grown dangerously close to or on top of a building. Working at height adds serious risk, and the rope is the key to controlling where the cut piece falls.
Before any cutting begins, the worker must assess the tree and the roof structure. If the tree roots have penetrated the roofing material, removing the tree could reveal damage that needs repair later. The operator wears a safety harness secured to a stable anchor point, plus a helmet, gloves, and non-slip boots. The rope is tied high on the branch or trunk to give maximum leverage and control.
The cutting technique follows the same principles as ground-level felling but adapted for the roof. A notch cut is made on the side where the branch should fall — a V-shaped opening about one-third of the way through. Then a back cut is made on the opposite side, slightly higher than the bottom of the notch, leaving a thin hinge of wood that guides the fall. As the cut deepens, an assistant on the ground pulls the rope steadily to steer the branch away from the roof, windows, or power lines.
For larger branches, a two-person team is essential: one on the roof cutting, one on the ground managing the rope and directing traffic below. The ground crew must stand well outside the fall zone — at least 1.5 times the height of the tree — and wear hard hats at all times.
After each piece is cut and lowered safely, the worker clears debris from the roof to prevent slips and blockages in the drainage system. The final step is inspecting the roof for any damage caused by the tree roots or the removal process itself.
This kind of job is dangerous enough that many professionals say: if the tree is taller than 5 meters or near power lines, call a licensed arborist instead. But for smaller branches on a sturdy roof, the rope-and-notch method gives you the control you need to work safely at height. Watch the clip to see how this rooftop tree job is done — with planning, teamwork, and a whole lot of respect for gravity.
