The ULTIMATE New Home Checklist - What to do BEFORE you close on your house - The Move-in checklist.

Buying a home can be stressful & often it’s overwhelming. You spend days or weeks packing up your entire lift & then, just a few days later you’re unpacking it all. That alone is enough to overwhelm most people. Many of you are leaving the town you were raised in, really the only place you’re ever really called Home & heading to a place you don’t know. This too can be unnerving. The process of moving from one place to another is chaotic, but if you’re organized the move can go smoothly. So, I’m going to simplify the process for you. Today I’m going to give you a simple check list of items you need to complete at the time of closing on your home. I’ve personally guided more than 400 people through the home buying process & I’ve closed on multiple homes for myself, so you can trust that I won’t leave anything significant out. My goal is to help you avoid the common mistakes I often see people make when buying a Home.

#1. Get rid of stuff. Do not be that person who just throws everything into boxes with the intentions of dejunking when you get to the new house. Have a yard sale. Take a load to the dump or donate them..
#2. Packing. Filling box after box can be one heck of a task. To save money, think of local business that may give you boxes. You could also ask your neighbors. You can also use garbage bags, suitcases, laundry baskets & etc. Also write on top of each box where you want them to go at the new home. This will save you will save a lot of time & stress. Also, take some blank pieces of paper & write things like Bedroom 1, 2, 3 & etc. then tape the sign to the appropriate locations in the new home so when you arrive, you know where the boxes go. Also, pack 1 special box with all of the essentials for you survive the first 24 hours. This will be things like toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, snacks, pajama’s a fresh change of clothes & etc.
#3 Set up your utilities. You’ll want to let them know a week in ahead of time. Start by calling the city office. Usually, they can tell you who the providers are. Often the city manages some of these services.
#4 Set up your Internet & television. You’ll want to do this before you move in. You’re going to want to schedule the service 2-3 weeks in advance. You may be able to transfer your services to the new home.
#5 Schedule time off at work. Usually one weekend isn’t long enough to unload all of the boxes & set everything up. You’ll also want to be present for many of the deliveries or services.
#6 Update your address. Start with the post office & have them forward your mail to the new address. Consider all of the companies that send you mail on a regular basis. Things like credit cards, banks, insurance companies, subscriptions.
#7 Schedule services. Have your home professionally cleaned. If the previous owners had pets you should have the carpets professional cleaned. Other services would include installers & repairs. Give yourself a few days after the previous owners move out so you can get work done before you move in. Schedule these services in advance.
#8 Secure your important documents & destroy the old. Find a safe place to keep important documents during the move. A place where they won’t get damaged or misplaced. These would be items like your tax returns, Social Security cards, birth certificates, medical & insurance information & ect.
#9 Take photos of anything of value. This is important if you’re using a moving company because they’ll replace anything they break or damage. I still recommend doing this even if you’re not planning on using a moving company.
#10 Get a lay of the land. Research nearby business. Find a doctor, pediatrician, hairdresser & etc. There are great like google or yelp but I’d recommend joining the Facebook page for the neighborhood you’re moving into & asking your future neighbors who they’d recommend. They give you honest answers, but you can also start building relationships with the people you’ll soon be calling your neighbors.
