NEW ADVENTURES OF CHARLIE CHAN #33 MAN OF 100 FACES

NEW ADVENTURES OF CHARLIE CHAN #33 - MAN OF 100 FACES - J. CARROLL NAISH

Character actor Alan Wheatley, who starred as Sherlock Holmes in a six-episode series on UK TV in 1951, and was the Sheriff of Nottingham in “Adventures of Robin Hood,” makes his second appearance opposite Charlie Chan. This time he’s Italy’s MAN OF 100 FACES. Could this be “Death in Venice?”

Also in the cast: Eric Pohlmann, Harry Tardios and Peter La Trobe.

IMDB offers an interesting tidbit on J. Carroll Naish’s accent. It’s “no different than the one he used for the evil Dr. Daka, a Japanese villain in the first Batman serial made during WWII.”

Now, a rant for those who want to know more about the “inside” world of YouTube and why I’ve slowed down in posting old TV shows. The myth is all channels “work” for YouTube and either get a salary or make money by sharing ad revenue (monetization).

A few years ago, YouTube, owned by GOOGLE, changed their policy on “monetization.” Now, only channels featuring “original content” are paid.

YouTube’s idea of “original content” is idiotic “influencers,” opinionated nuts, and goofy “know-it-alls” offering bad advice on repairs. Channels such as mine, are supposed to upload as a “labor of love,” or for the thrill of being in “show biz.” Most of us simply can’t work for nothing (everybody at Google GETS PAID), or burden our subscribers with sad “donate via Paypal” requests.

The money I USED to get, went toward buying rare 16mm prints and gambling that thrift shop VHS tapes might have rare things on them. Why YouTube would pay some “jackass” stuntboy $50 for 100,000 views, and NOT do the same if I get 100,000 views on something worthwhile, funny or educational, I don’t know.

Blood is on their hands, too.

Timothy Wilks? Pedro Ruiz? Just two examples of guys who DIED while YouTube “stunts” were being recorded. That’s our beloved YouTube? They won’t encourage us to watch Tim Conway laughing with David Janssen but want amateur idiots to do dangerous stupid things?

Nasim Aghdam arrived at YouTube headquarters in San Bruno and shot herself. What caused the suicide? According to AP News, “Aghdam was angry about YouTube’s policies and practices….Aghdam’s father said YouTube stopped paying for videos she posted on the platform.”

You can bet that her attempts to phone or email anyone in power at YouTube only increased her frustration. Let’s remember that what YouTube, Spotify and other big bullies pay is more like “hobby money,” and few make a living at it. As I said, my monthly payment was a couple of hundred bucks, but it was nice to be appreciated, and that I could subsidize my “hobby” and not lose money in acquiring new things to post.

Naseem was making barely enough to buy food and keep her computer working. For a time, she had been living in her car.

But YouTube finances low-class “influencers” stealing their wit from Rumi or Gibran, opinionated nitwits making faces while “auditioning” some rotten new Cardi B song, and dumbass homeys bragging about how much they paid for sneakers. I give you Jonathan Winters, Guy Marks, Bob Newhart…not the latest antics of a creep like Jake Paul.

How about THIS headline in the NY Post on April13th?

“YouTube star and boxer Jake Paul has been accused of sexual assault by TikTok sensation Justine Paradise. Paradise detailed the alleged assault in a 20-minute video on YouTube released last Friday, claiming it happened at Paul’s Team 10 California residence.” Jeez, let’s have more classic film and TV clips to “influence” people.

Another oddity: if I wanted to upload a clip from “The Tonight Show,” YouTube allows it, because Carson Productions gets monetization. As they should, YouTube pays the copyright owner. BUT…they should also pay the prospector who digs up an old silent film, or public domain TV show.

More frustration: YouTube’s Draconian rule is that I can’t be monetized as long as I have movie and TV clips on my channel. If I actually decided to do nothing but self-made clips of me showing you how to open a jackfruit or unbox a box, YouTube won’t make those eligible for payment UNTIL I get rid of ALL the clips I’m not in...like this Chan show, where I had to take time to find it, to isolate a good image to illustrate it, and make sure of the sound and picture quality. (If somebody steals my upload for THEIR channel...that's a half hour in reporting it, and only a 50-50 chance YouTube would do anything about it!)
I’m stuck between wanting to do more for the creative talents I upload, and wanting to stand up for what is right. I still upload now and then, but not as I did years ago when I got modest payment. I do appreciate the nice comments I get (and try to explain to the grumps that it costs money to boost sound, sharpen images, an FIND the clips).
As Mr. Taupin once wrote: “it’s a sad sad situation, and it’s getting more and more absurd.”
