Taiwan & ICAO
Reconnect Taiwan
Embassy of the Republic of China(Taiwan)
In the wake of global disconnection caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 41st session of the triennial International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) resumes. As the meeting is themed “Reconnecting the World”, we called on ICAO to reconnect with Taiwan to achieve its objectives of a seamless global sky.
As the world’s 22nd largest economy, Taiwan has been a hub connecting Northeast and Southeast Asia. Complying with ICAO’s Standards and Recommended Practices, the Civil Aeronautics Administration of Taiwan (Taiwan CAA) provides key services for 18 international routes in the Taipei Flight Information Region, the Taipei FIR, in areas such as control, aeronautical electronics and communication and flight information, just to name a few. Not to mention that Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, Taiwan’s largest, was the fourth-busiest airport in the world for international air cargo. The place of Taipei FIR amid ICAO’s over 300 global FIRs is significant.
ICAO, an important forum spurring the development of aviation, is where civil aviation authorities discuss key issues such as aviation safety, air navigation services, aviation security, environmental protection, and aviation economics. All of these bear on the development of each country’s civil aviation sector. As the global aviation industry has been hit especially hard by the pandemic, collaboration among all stakeholders in support of passenger health and safe travel is more important than ever. No civil aviation authority should be excluded.
As the Marshall Islands recently opened its border after being disconnected for 2 years amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, let’s not forget that the sky over the 23 million people of the RMI’s close ally – Taiwan is not yet connected to ICAO. It is not only a risk, but also a loss to the integrity of global aviation.
The goal of a global seamless sky is never complete without Taipei FIR. It’s time to reconnect Taiwan with ICAO.
