Hearing Loss and Quality of Life in Vestibular Schwannoma

Dr. Christopher Graffeo, a Chief Resident in Neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, reviews his article appearing in the November 2020 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where results of a patient cross-sectional study revealed adverse quality-of-life impacts associated with both subjective and objective hearing among patients with vestibular schwannomas, independent of treatment. Of particular interest, the extent hearing loss threshold that resulting in significant loss in quality-of-life was lower than previously reported in the literature and the word recognition score was shown to be a better predictor than pure tone average in assessing how hearing loss would impact quality-of-life domains. This information can aid clinicians with discussing prognosis and outcomes of treatment, particularly among patients with intact baseline hearing. Available at: https://mayocl.in/3hzndok
