Constipation can be a real problem for those trying to transition to a whole food plant-based diet, but there are several strategies you can use to lessen the discomfort and the time spent in this state. It is first important to understand that constipation, as well as diarrhea, bloating, gas, and abdominal pain may be a common result of eating more healthy plant-based foods. These uncomfortable side effects occur for a number of reasons and are experienced differently by each person.

The major causes of these abdominal issues are your body's natural adjustments to the water, fiber, and nutrients food in whole plant foods. These tummy problems will be likely more pronounced in people transitioning from a heavy animal and processed food diet style. The more adjustments your body has to make, likely, the more discomfort and constipation you will experience. There are several ways to relieve or minimize these experiences, however. You can transition to eating healthier foods more gradually. You can minimize the amount of beans and seeds you eat until your gut flora and muscles in your colon catch up with your dietary changes. Sometimes you just need to be patient while your body gets back on track naturally. This video will dive into the symptoms, causes, and ways to resolve constipation experienced when transitioning to a WFPB diet.
