A Deserted Housing Estate Where Only A Few Residents Remain - Gerards Bridge Estate St Helens -

Only a few residents remain on the estate after everyone was asked to leave

The last people living on a derelict estate will soon have 61 homes demolished around them.

the homes on Union Street in St Helens, which forms part of the Gerard Bridge estate are to be demolished at the end of November 2023

homeowners said when they first moved to Union Street it was home to a nice community including old fashioned neighbours they could rely on. But they will soon be living in the middle of a demolition site after all of their neighbours were moved out.

In 2019, housing association Torus put forward plans to demolish 61 homes on the estate amid concerns about the "future sustainability" of the properties and "wider environmental issues."

Since then, Torus has rehoused all of its tenants, leaving a few people living in the middle of a derelict estate. They are both yet to reach an agreement with Torus to buy their homes and don’t know what the future holds.

Residents were asked to vote on the plans to demolish 61 houses on Union Street, College Street, Crab Street and Fox Place in July 2019, with 78 per cent of those that voted backing the demolition.

Anti-social behaviour is said to have been an issue on part of the estate for years, but the issues increased when the houses became empty. Twenty four hour security is now based on Union Street to help stop vandals from breaking into the empty houses and setting fire to them.

"At first there were kids causing lots of problems, they set houses alight. This is why they had to put in security next door. There has been drug dealing down the road as well. It's just deteriorated.

What Torus, St Helens Council and Merseyside Police had to say...

Torus Head of Assets Investment, Mike Austin, said: “Unfortunately, we have not been able to reach an agreement with the homeowners and we will be progressing with the partial demolition of the site.

"We are working with Cadent to install a new gas main to keep the two properties connected to the gas supply and will be looking to start demolition once this has been resolved and subject to renewed planning permissions. We hope to start later this month.

“To prevent issues with anti-social behaviour and criminal damage, Torus have kept a security presence on site, this security will remain on site until the demolition is completed.

"We take all reports of vermin seriously and ensure they are dealt with appropriately. Torus has also reported the broken streetlight to the statutory electrical service provider to repair, but now we are aware that this hasn’t happened we have contacted them again to resolve.

“Torus Developments are still reviewing options available for the site in the future. I would like to confirm that Torus have not closed the door on purchasing the properties in the future if a reasonable agreement can be reached.”
