Brother Speedio spindle/atc recovery after loss of air

I accidentally turned the air off and during a tool change the spindle got stuck and I was unable to reset in the normal way.

The error was a z axis stroke exceeded. SM2017

On page 11-308 of operation manual the procedure is as follows

1. Put the rapid on 2
2. Hold down and do not let go of RELSE
3. While holding RELSE, hit reset
4. Hold - Z until the spindles is down a sufficient distance and you can let go of RELSE.
5. While still in MANU, hit ATC a couple of times to verify things are as they should be
