♫ Dearly Beloved

On one windless, still spring night, I would meet the man that I now love, here, at the edge of this pier. I could intuit his presence, but I gazed at the sea a while longer, allowing ourselves to linger in that moment, before I would at last turn around and hurl us both into the knowing, the coming together, the making of something inexplicable.

Amidst some moonlit infinity we were together, and we did many things, said many things, but the greatest beauty lied in the closing interstices between our hearts. You and I were the quiet things no one else could ever know. But, my love, did we know each other? In the hours and nights that stole away, did we find each other?

Could I have your shy eyes as our eyes happen upon each other? The hair I can never quite fix? Your goofy smile as you look at me for a moment too long? The nook of your arm that would bring me closer to you? Or you to me? The curve in your mouth as our lips would meet? The hand which unfurled for mine?
Could I have the vacant eyes that rest upon me? The hair I could not once again touch? The uncurled lips as you look at me for a moment gone and vanished? The nook of your arm beyond my reach? The sealed drawers in which you keep yourself?

Once you tapped the bow above my lips and told me you liked that. You pondered its name. I didn't know then.

Philtrum.
