‎In a shocking twist, the Supreme Court of Virginia has officially thrown out Democrats’ controversial redistricting referendum, even after voters narrowly approved it just weeks ago. The court ruled that the entire process violated Virginia’s constitution, making the election result completely invalid. But now, Virginia Democrats are rushing to SCOTUS, demanding emergency intervention before the 2026 midterm elections.
‎Democrats claim the state court made a “grave misunderstanding of federal law” and warn that millions of voters could be affected if the ruling stands. According to their filing, candidates, voters, and even the Commonwealth itself would suffer “irreparable harm” if the newly drawn congressional map is blocked.
‎So why is this such a massive deal? Because the proposed map could dramatically shift political power. Right now, Virginia’s congressional split stands at 6 Republicans to 5 Democrats. But under the new map, Democrats could gain a huge advantage with 10 Democrat-friendly districts and only 1 Republican-leaning seat.
