Here is the outline of my talking points!
1.)Choose rules that you will enforce consistently: Ask teachers their rules
*You might get tested the first day
*Better to have a few rules you enforce then a ton of rules that aren’t enforceable
*Be consistent
*Stop a task if it isn’t going well
*Find out what consequences you are allowed to give
*Think about what level of talking you are comfortable with
*Think about your restroom policy and ask around or you will have kids asking to go all day every day every minute
*You can start stricter than you plan to be for the rest of the year
2.) Aim for 100% compliance throughout the school year sometimes you are lucky to have 80%
*(20% theory)
*Don't do wild and crazy fun icebreaker activities
*Start in a very measured and controlled manner, you can do turn and talk to your partner, but be cautious about too many out of seat activities
*BMC
*Compliment good behavior
*Track assignment completion and have mini chats with kids not turning in work
*Make the first assignment a letter that needs to be signed by parents
*Sticker charts if they are allowed
3)Make it your goal to be professional
*Professional demeanor
*Don’t yell, don’t argue try not to cry & don’t get in power struggles
*Act confident (teaching is acting) pick a person that is warm yet in charge
*Professional dress
*Don’t try to be the cool teacher and don’t be bff’s
*Professional behavior and communication
*Be as positive as possible
*De-escalate
4.Think through every routine and procedure (could be its own video)
*Focus on organization over beauty, you can always add decor, but losing a stack of permission slips won’t be quickly forgiven (i know)
*Entrance and exit routine
*First days of school book
*Organization of papers
*Have students practice routines and use timers
5.)Contact parents early
*Try to contact parents before the kid makes something up
*Use google voice to text or email
*Sandwich method
*Have kids call parents in front of you from their phone
6.)You don’t have to answer every question
*Offer to answer off topic questions after class on their time (ask me again…)
*Have a funny one liner for disrespectful questions “It's my job to make those important decisions”
*Why do you ask?
*So and so did… thanks for letting me know, I will ask her more about that later
*That’s personal and its really not polite to ask
*I’m not taking questions right now
*We don’t have time- Parking Lot
*Bonus: Don’t make up answers to questions
*Admit it, Does anyone else have an answer or I’d love for you to look up that answer and share with us tomorrow
7.)Command Respect
*Call out disrespect specifically
*Describe behavior and act it out
*Set boundaries kindly
*Do a respect looks like sounds like activity
*Ask them if you could talk to your boss they way they are talking to you right now
*Ask them if they talk to their mom or grandma like that
*Ask for the specific behavior to stop
*If students refuse say what you will or wont do
8.)Document every issue
*but be careful who you talk about your problems to
9.Get to know your students
*Name game (2 college teachers used everyone's picture to memorize their name)
*Have students write letters to you telling you anything that you should know
*At meet the teacher night, ask parents is there anything I should know
*Tell them a little about yourself
10.) Give yourself Grace!
