Hindustani Classical or Indian Classical music is like a vast ocean that has many treasured jewels hidden in its belly. Especially in the tradition of Hindustani Classical Vocal format. One such jewel is the young and super talented Hindustani Classical vocalist Omkar Dadarkar.

This album contains primarily two Ragas, Raga Desh and Raga Miyan Ki Malhar brilliantly presented by this young turk of Indian Classical Music. Malhar is an old Raga in Indian Classical Music. Malhar is associated with the atmosphere of torrential rains. Besides the basic Shuddha Malhar, which was the original Malhar, there are several Malhar-related ragas that use the Malhar signature phrase including Miyan Ki Malhar, Ramdasi Malhar, Gaud Malhar, Sur Malhar, Des Malhar, Nat Malhar, and Meera ki Malhar. According to legend, raga Malhar is so powerful that when sung, it can induce rainfall. It is possible that the rainfall that the legends speak of is in fact metaphorical of the state of mind brought about by the recital of the raga. According to a legend, once the Mughal emperor Akbar asked his court musician Tansen to sing Raga Deepak, the raga of fire. The effect was such that all the lamps in the courtyard lit up themselves, and Tansen's body became so hot that he had to sit in the nearby river to cool himself. However, the river began to boil, and it became apparent that Tansen would soon boil to death. He set out on a search to find someone who could sing Raga Malhar to cure him. In due course he reached Vadnagar, in Gujarat, where he found two sisters, Tana and Riri, whom he asked for help. They agreed to sing Raga Malhar to cure him. When they sang the Raga, rains came down in torrents, which cooled Tansen's body immediately. Though Miyan ki malhar and Raga Bahar have the same tone material, the melodic movements in Miyan ki malhar are rather serious and slow, moving more in the lower tetra-chord, whereas movements in Bahar are more sprightly and center around the high Sa.

The other Raga brilliantly rendered by the the maestro in this album is probably the most talked about and popular Raga from the sub-continent, which is Raga Desh. The raga is of Audav-sampurna nature, i.e., in its arohana (ascent) only five notes are used, whereas the avarohana (descent) uses all the seven notes. Shuddha Ni is used in the arohana, while Komal Ni is used in avarohana. All other swaras are shuddha. This one is a night time Raga and is to be sung during the second quarter of the night. Raga Desh has been used in patriotic compositions. Vande Mataram, the national song of India, is the most well-known. The popular old Doordarshan video Baje Sargam, that featured many respected Indian classical singers, is also based on Raga Desh. Omkar Dadarkar with his melodic improvisations has done a brilliant job on rendering these masterpieces. Omkar Dadarkar is an Indian classical vocalist who has maintained his originality and tradition. A true perfectionist, this young talent is one of the bright sparks that will carry the beacon of Hindustani Classical Music forward. This album is a Indian Classical Music listener's delight.
