Lee Health is a nationally recognized, award-winning health system in Southwest Florida. We are caring people, inspiring health.
From bathing to dressing, even eating, everyday certified nursing assistant Dershay Brown cares for patients by helping them with daily tasks. “My job is basically to provide patient care, to make sure they are comfortable, they have what they need,” said Dershay Brown, a certified nursing assistant with Lee Health.
At Health Park Medical Center, Dershay works closely with nurses and physicians to make sure patients receive the care they need. “As soon as I get in, we get our assignment; we huddle to do a shift change where they tell us what we are doing, and what’s going on with the patient. We do rounding where we go into the patient’s room, introduce ourselves, and get a little information to get us started for the night,” she explained.
CNA’s are certified in CPR and First Aid. In addition to patient care, they’re trained in how to take vital signs, urine samples, and record patient progress and medical information. “I’m able to sit down with my patient and actually talk to them, and they feel good about it afterward,” said Dershay.
CNA’s can get their license through a six-week program—teaching them about medicine and patient care. “We do classwork, which is learning the body, learning how to deal with patients, learning the laws of nursing, then we go into clinical training, where they teach us how to hands-on care with the patients to provide safe care,” she said.
Like Dershay, many CNA’s continue their education to become a registered nurse. “As a CNA you can go into LPN, you can go into RN, you can do home health,” said Dershay.
A career that offers growth, hands-on training, and intimate time caring for patients in the hospital or a nursing home. “It feels good to go home and say I helped someone today; I made them feel good today,” said Dershay.
