Aaron Burr is one of America's most infamous figures — the Vice President who killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel. But the official history of his family tree left out something extraordinary.
New research — combining autosomal DNA testing, a 200-year-old letter, and a property deed — revealed that Aaron Burr fathered two children with Mary Eugenie Emmons, a woman born in Kolkata, India, who worked as a servant in his household. Those children, Louisa Charlotte and John Pierre Burr, lived as free people of color in Philadelphia. John Pierre became a conductor on the Underground Railroad, working alongside Harriet Tubman and Lucretia Mott. His grave went unmarked for 155 years.
In 2018, the Aaron Burr Association formally recognized John Pierre and Louisa Charlotte as Aaron Burr's children — after law professor Sherri Burr presented DNA evidence alongside documentary proof accumulated over decades of research.
