Speaking truth to data | Maxim Februari | TEDxAmsterdam

Do we need a voice in a society where our data speak for us? Where our smart dishwashers and smart cities pretend to know us better than we know ourselves?
The rise of the Internet of Everything calls for a new perspective on democracy and the law. The infrastructure of connected things – movement detectors, seaports, connected pets, telephones, artificial limbs – imposes norms on citizens. Not in the form of written laws: the norms are hidden in the design of things. Citizens can’t protest the new laws, or change them, because they do not know them. And because decisions are made automatically, the laws can’t even be violated; they thus tend to be much stricter than the old books of law. If the Digital Era is to be democratic, subjects must regain power over the rules that govern them.

Maxim Februari is a Dutch writer and philosopher of law. He is interested to find out how law and politics will survive the influence of smart technologies. Member of independent advisory board DEGAS (Dutch Expert Group Aviation Safety), he writes novels, essays and a weekly column for Dutch Newspaper NRC Handelsblad.
