Robert Schumann is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of the Romantic era. He intended to pursue a career as a virtuoso pianist, but a hand injury ended this dream. He then put all his energies on composition instead.

Schumann suffered from a mental disorder that first manifested in 1833. He died of pneumonia at the age of 46, without recovering from his mental illness.

Kinderszenen is a set of thirteen pieces of music for piano written in 1838. Schumann wrote 30 movements for this work but chose only 13 of them for the final version. The other 17 movements were later published in "Albumblätter" and "Bunte Blätter". These miniature pieces - some of them are less than a page - were inspired by her comment that he sometimes seemed "like a child". In 1840, Schumann described them as "more cheerful, gentler, more melodic" than his earlier works.
