Maria Callas and Giuseppe di Stefano create mass Hysteria (end D6)

-From Manoli S.
What a pair they were, and when they with Gobbi they were an iconic trio. I love this scene, Callas brings it to life. You feel Lucia going batshit as the scene progresses and she realizes further and further how she's been betrayed. Callas puts the hurt, the nightmare in her voice. And the last note, usually an emotionless and tasteless showy thing for any other singer, is a cry of pain and despair as Lucia's sanity slips away, the last we see of her before the mad scene. God bless Maria, the greatest interpreter of bel canto to ever be recorded. Yia Sou Maria
-From Shahrdad:
Robert Sutherland, who was Callas's accompanist in her ill-advised final tour, wrote in his book about her that in her latter years, Callas liked to listen to pirated recordings of her own performances with her friends. Once he listened with her to this Lucia, and he said, "That's some wonderful singing." She said, "Wonderful? It's bloody miraculous! And to think I was so unhappy with myself after this performance that I wept."
