Lecture Overview:
From the 9th to the 15th century, the Islamic world led global advancements in science, with astronomy at the forefront. Rooted in Greek traditions, Arabic astronomy reached new heights in the 13th century through the groundbreaking work of the Maragha Observatory in Persia. The Maragha School pioneered mathematical models that challenged Aristotelian cosmology and laid the groundwork for future observatories in Samarqand, Istanbul, and even European scientific institutions.

In this lecture, Prof. Rihab Sawah explores the pivotal role of Islamic civilization in the development of astronomy and its enduring influence on modern science.

نبذة عن المحاضرة:
بين القرنين التاسع والخامس عشر، تصدرت الحضارة الإسلامية المشهد العلمي العالمي، وكان لعلم الفلك موقع الريادة بين تلك الإنجازات. وقد استمد علم الفلك العربي أصوله من التقاليد اليونانية القديمة، إلا أنه شهد قفزة نوعية في القرن الثالث عشر من خلال أعمال مرصد مراغة في بلاد فارس. حيث طوّرت مدرسة مراغة نماذج رياضية متقدمة شكّلت تحديًا للنموذج الأرسطي، ومهّدت الطريق لإنشاء مراصد علمية لاحقة في سمرقند وإسطنبول، وكان لها تأثير مباشر في تأسيس المؤسسات العلمية الأوروبية الحديثة.

في هذه المحاضرة، تسلط الدكتورة رحاب السواح الضوء على الدور المحوري الذي لعبته الحضارة الإسلامية في تطور علم الفلك، وتأثيرها العميق والمستمر في مسيرة العلم حتى يومنا هذا.
