Pernio (Chilblains), SARS-CoV-2, and COVID Toes
Dr. Jonathan Cappel, a Dermatologist at the Surgical Dermatology Group in Birmingham, AL, reviews his article coauthored with Drs Mark Cappel and David Wetter, and appearing in the April 2021 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceeding, where they looked at the diagnosis and pathogenesis for one of the most common COVID-19-related skin conditions – Pernio. Pernio, also known as chilblains or recently popularly referred to as COVID toes, consists of erythema and swelling of the toes and/or fingers. Although direct causation has not consistently been established, an increase in pernio-like skin eruptions has been noted in COVID-19 patients, which may help guide clinicians to a possible COVID-19 diagnosis and also be an indicator of COVID-19 infection severity.
