The Day Mamluks Shattered the Invincible Mongol Horde: The Battle of Ain Jalut #history #mamluks

In 1260, after the Mongols sacked Baghdad and toppled the Abbasid Caliphate, they surged into Syria and Palestine under General Kitbuqa, a fierce Mongol commander. With most of the Mongol forces pulled back to Mongolia after the death of Great Khan Möngke, Kitbuqa was left with a smaller army, but one still feared as unstoppable.
Sensing a rare opportunity, the Mamluk Sultan Qutuz led his forces out of Egypt. Though historically enemies, the Crusaders feared the Mongols more and allowed the Mamluks to pass freely through their lands. Among the Mamluk ranks was General Baibars, a brilliant tactician who had already humiliated the Crusaders during the Seventh Crusade.
At Ain Jalut, in the heart of Palestine, Baibars employed the same strategy that had crushed the Crusaders: he feigned a retreat, luring the Mongol cavalry into a narrow valley. Hidden Mamluk archers and infantry ambushed them from the flanks and hillsides. In a brutal and shocking reversal, the Mongol horde was annihilated.
General Kitbuqa, a proud Mongol warrior, was captured and executed. This crushing defeat didn’t just end the Mongol push into Africa, it shattered the myth of Mongol invincibility for the first time in open battle. The Mamluks returned to Egypt as heroes, their power secured, and the Islamic world spared further Mongol conquest.
