“Brothers” – Red Rock Canyon to Mammoth Mountain | California Backcountry Adventure Short Film

“Brothers” is a short film capturing an unforgettable backcountry adventure across California, following brothers Brandon and Paul Chestnut as they set out to explore some of the most beautiful and rugged terrain the Golden State has to offer.

Starting in Los Angeles, we packed up the truck and made our way through the Mojave Desert, Red Rock Canyon, Alabama Hills, and Bishop, before finally landing in Mammoth Lakes for a late-season snowboarding and skiing session in May 2025.

Day two brought some unexpected weather, and with the mountain socked in, I (Brandon) decided to switch things up and try skiing for the first time. Let’s just say it went better than expected—but very different than snowboarding. I can ride black diamonds all day on a snowboard, but on skis, the mountain definitely won a few rounds. Still, it was all part of the fun.

After a long day on the slopes, we camped out near the basin, soaked in the hot springs, and recharged—literally and figuratively. Throughout the entire trip, from off-roading through desert trails to freezing mountain mornings, our power setup never missed a beat. We relied on the Dakota Lithium 12V 100Ah battery and PS2400 Portable Power Station to keep our 12V fridge, camera gear, communication devices, and drones running. When you’re hundreds of miles from anything, having reliable power you can trust makes all the difference—and gives you the freedom to focus on what matters most: the adventure itself.

This film is more than just an overland trip—it’s about family, connection, and chasing experiences that remind us what it means to be alive. Flying from Florida to California a few times a year to see my brother isn’t just a vacation—it’s a tradition. These are the moments we’ll look back on and cherish forever… even if he almost killed me hyping me up to ski.
