Hamilton Grange House Moving, Manhattan, NY - Part 1
Built in the 1802, this was the home of the famous founding father and Secretary of Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. The building weighed just over 300 ton with its brick filled insulation frame walls and four large fireplaces. Wolfe House and Building Movers started this move in May 2008. The most challenging part of the job was moving the stone porch, which jutted out in front of the house from the neighboring church, removing any chances of having the house moved out the front of the property. With the back also not an option, Wolfe House Movers decided to go up and over the stone porch. The house was lifted 32' up into the air, slowly slid over the porch and was moved out over the street. It was then jacked back down just above the street, set onto hydraulic powered dollies and moved around the corner, down the hill and into St. Nicholas Park about a city block away. The move went off without a hitch to the delight of the National Park Service, Wolfe House Movers and the surrounding crowd of New Yorkers and other people who showed up for the amazing house move. The entire move took almost two months worth of work after which the restoration began. The building was later opened as a National Museum sometime in 2010.
