The Minister finishes his sermon, and as everyone files out of the church, people are heard saying that it was his best to date, and that he had never before spoken so true the word of god. As Mr Dimmesdale is leaving he turns and sees Hester, he hesitates a moment and the invites she and Pearl to join him on the scaffold, hand in hand. Roger Chillingworth tries to convince him not to, but he nonetheless mounts the scaffold and before everyone in the state, confesses himself as « The One Sinner of the world. »
After finishing his confession , he steps forward and reveals his chest, on which he is marked with a red stigma. Following this, he collapses on the floor, and Pearl finally places a kiss on the minister. He and Hester exchange some words, and he asks her if she will join him forever in the afterlife as wife. She responds that it depends on what God decides, following this, the Minister dies.
