The Columbia Fireworks Wars are a tradition that have taken place on July 4th for decades in Columbia, Missouri. Participants take to the streets to launch fireworks at each other in all out wars that can last until 4 am. Attempts to stop the war have historically resulted in participants teaming up to launch fireworks at responding police.

In the aftermath of the 2018 Columbia Fireworks War, Boone County Sheriff Dewayne Carey made a pledge to stop future wars at all costs, and a woman claimed the deputies refused to enter the "war zone" to provide aid to her little sister who had been injured in the fray. The discourse led to dueling legislative proposals, one to outlaw the war once and for all, and the other to make it an officially sanctioned event at the fairgrounds. The battle may have ended, but the war was far from over.
