Genesis - Live UK 9th/10th July 1976 (HD)

This concert film was recorded on the last two dates of the Genesis Trick of the Tail tour on July 9th/10th, 1976 and includes Bill Bruford from Yes on drums. It was filmed by Tony Maylam and turned into a movie (with distracting stock footage) you could get tickets to see at regular movie theatres worldwide in early 1977. For more information on the White Rock movie, see my webpage here: http://www.genesismuseum.com/press/76inconcert.htm

I took the laserdisc source, AI upscaled, corrected the speed, interpolated to 60fps for smooth motion, restored color, and remastered the soundtrack at the correct speed. Because of the limited source, I am not sure how much of this was useful in the end, but that is up to the viewer to decide.

Technical Details:

Although filmed in 35mm, the best official source of this film is the laserdisc which was nice for it's time, but is far outdated analog technology by now. Making matters worse, almost no laserdiscs were anamorphic at the time of release. This means that this widescreen image was put into a 4:3 box, only using a paltry 290 lines of resolution, the rest just black bars.

I AI upscaled this to something more reasonable (1936x870) for large displays, but of course only so much can be done without creating really strange artifacts, and I am not sure how much this process was able to achieve.

Also since this was an analog source, there was some ghosting (ringing) where multiple images can be seen as a sort of faded duplication of the main image, making it less distinct. I removed some of this, but removing the remaining ghosts made the image look strange, so I left it with just the largest offender removed.

The color is not consistent in this film as there is a lot of orangy red on stage. I corrected as much as reasonably possible, without darkening too much. I also cleaned some film spots, dust, etc. but the interlaced source made this not totally successful.

The speed of this film is another crazy thing. The assumption is that the film was recorded at 24fps, as most films are. But this was then sped up to 25fps for UK broadcast (4% faster) along with the audio at this higher pitch. Not satisfied only with this change, the film was then interlaced to 29.97fps for laserdisc. I tried to inverse pulldown back to the original frames, but some were lost in this process. Instead I corrected the frame rate and then interpolated (ffmpeg) to 60fps to make it as smooth as possible.

The audio used to run 4% fast and a higher pitch. I corrected this and remastered it for a bit more stereo separation, compression in the high end for cleaner drums, and EQed for fuller sound. The sound was fairly good on the laserdisc so less work was needed here. Play it loud!

In the end this was a ton of processes that I am not sure how worth it they all were. Stretching a tiny interlaced film to the brink may not have been ideal, but I think it is the best the laserdisc source can produce, so I hope the results are worth it.
