How Do RC Helicopters Fly Upside Down & Why Can't Full Size Helicopters Fly Upside Down?

How do RC helicopters fly upside down and maintain inverted flight while full size helicopters can't fly upside down; at least most can't, and none can maintain inverted flight like an RC helicopter can. There are several reasons which will be covered in this video.

The main thing you need for RC helicopters to fly upside down / inverted, is a collective pitch range than can produce the same amount of lift while inverted as when right side up. In other words, you can change the angle of attack of the main rotor blades to produce negative pitch which will become positive pitch when upside down. This is known in the hobby as a symmetrical collective pitch range. Typical blade pitch will range from around -12 degrees to +12 degrees of pitch.

The other reasons of how do RC helicopters fly inverted include: blade shape and strength, power to weight ratios, and inverted fuel systems or in the case of electric powered RC helicopters, no need for inverted fuel systems.
