Developing the Roundhouse-Kick

This presentation outlines a motor skill acquisition framework for developing the roundhouse kick using a Constraints-Led Approach within an Ecological Dynamics framework. Rather than relying on repetition or explicit instruction, skill is viewed as an adaptive process emerging from the interaction of individual, task, and environmental constraints, as described by Newell. Classical theories such as Fitts and Posner’s stages of learning, Gentile’s model, and Schmidt’s Schema Theory provide foundational understanding of how coordination and variability develop, but this proposal adopts an ecological perspective where movement is shaped through perception–action coupling, affordances, and self-organisation. Practically, this is applied through a constrained training environment using a wall, box, and confined space to guide efficient movement solutions, followed by perceptual layering with a slam ball (for force and recoil) and a suspended tennis ball (for precision and timing) to increase task-specific informational demands. This creates multiple affordances, requiring the athlete to continuously perceive and adapt their movement. Practice is designed as a process of search rather than repetition, progressing from part to variable to random conditions, before advancing into open skill environments through live perturbations such as simulated attacks, which develop anticipation, decision-making, and reaction timing. Learning is ultimately assessed through retention and transfer, not temporary performance, with the key principle being that if the skill does not transfer to realistic environments, it has not truly been learned. Overall, this approach demonstrates how integrating ecological dynamics with applied coaching design can produce adaptable, transferable movement solutions while acknowledging limitations such as potential over-constraint, individual variability, and the ongoing development of empirical support for the approach.
