Haltemprice and Howden byelection campaign
James Landale reports from the very strange Haltemprice and Howden byelection in July 2008. The Labour government proposed legislation allowing those suspected of terrorism to be detained for questioning for up to 42 days before charge, and Conservative MP David Davis resigned as Shadow Home Secretary and vacated his seat to stand for re-election in defence of civil liberties.
Labour and Liberal Democrats declined to field candidates but 25 others did stand - some seriously, others not. This report was transmitted on 2 July 2008, a week before polling day.
