Canada introducing new version of "lawful access" bill to give CSIS, police more online powers
Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree announced that the federal government on Thursday tabled a new version of its “lawful access” legislation that would give police new powers to pursue online data for investigative purposes while addressing some of the privacy concerns raised by the original version of the bill.
"This new legislation, Bill C-22, balances the needs of law enforcement with the privacy and civil rights that Canadians demand. And I want to be clear what C-22 is not. It is not about surveillance of Canadians going on about their daily lives. It is about keeping Canadians safe in the online space," said Anandasangaree.
Although the new bill, C-22, still contains warrantless powers, that will be restricted to apply to demanding confirmation from telecommunication service providers of whether they have provided services to a specific person.
The new bill would also allow Canadian police to seek authority, through a court, to request transmission data or subscriber information from a foreign company like Google, Meta or OpenAI.
