Richter plays Tchaikovsky "Capriccioso"

1983 recording of Tchaikovsky's "Capriccioso" in B-flat, no.5 of Six Pieces for Piano, op.19.

Six Pieces for piano, op.19:

Completed between 27 October/8 November 1873 in Moscow, some pieces were written during the summer of 1873 at Kamenka, composed at the request of Tchaikovsky's publisher Petr Jurgenson, first published by him in 1874 as a single volume.

In his diary entry for 11/23 July 1873, Tchaikovsky noted down themes for a projected Symphony in B flat major, which was used in the Capriccioso, no:5.

The piece is dedicated to Eduard Langer, Russian pianist and teacher (1835/1905), one of the staff of the Moscow Conservatory on its opening in 1866 as professor of piano - a position he held for the remainder of his life. Among his students were Sergei Taneev and Tchaikovsky's future wife Antonina Miliukova.
