Why USS Tripoli Carries 20 F-35Bs Iran Can't See — 45,000 Tons, 0 Confirmed Loadout

The latest Iran news out of U.S. Central Command involves a ship most coverage has missed. On March 14, 2026, the U.S. Navy redeployed the USS Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group to the Persian Gulf following the joint U.S.-Israeli strike campaign that began February 28. The press release named the ship, the Marines, the escort vessels, and the squadrons. It did not name the loadout. That omission is the entire story.
USS Tripoli is LHA-7, the second hull of the America-class amphibious assault ship. The America-class is built differently from any other amphibious platform in the U.S. fleet. There is no well deck. The full lower-deck volume is reconfigured for aviation fuel, ordnance, and F-35B sustainment. The result is a 45,000-ton ship rated for amphibious operations that, in practice, functions as a small aircraft carrier optimized for fifth-generation strike.
On April 7, 2022, USS Tripoli ran the proof-of-concept evolution that defined the Lightning Carrier doctrine. Twenty F-35Bs from VMFA-211, VMFA-225, and the Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron VMX-1 were embarked, launched, and recovered across a sustained-operations cycle. Twenty fifth-generation strike aircraft from a single deck. The Navy proved the math. The Marine Corps proved the doctrine. Tehran is now in the position of having to plan against that maximum.
The escort ships were named. USS San Diego LPD-22 and USS New Orleans LPD-18 — both San Antonio-class amphibious transport docks. The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, roughly 2,200 Marines, is embarked. The mission was characterized publicly as strike support, non-combatant evacuation operations, and crisis response if required.
What the press release omitted is the F-35B squadron count and aircraft total. The omission isn't an oversight. It's a doctrine.
The reasoning works backward. If Iran knew the Tripoli was carrying six F-35Bs, Iranian air defense planners could allocate the appropriate engagement budget. If Iran knew it was twenty, the engagement budget would shift again. By withholding the count, the Pentagon forces Tehran to plan against the worst case — twenty fifth-generation, sensor-fused, network-linked strike aircraft operating from a deck that, after the Lincoln strike group's Growler campaign, Iran's targeting cycle cannot reliably close on.
USS Bataan, the only America-class peer currently in the active rotation, is in heavy maintenance through mid-2026 after the December 2025 fire. USS Iwo Jima is in the Caribbean. The Tripoli is the platform on station. The Pentagon is letting that fact sit.
