3 Way Switch Wiring Made Easy, applies to 4-Way Switches and dimmer switches.
This covers the basics of wiring 3 Way Switches. There are several ways to wire three way switches, the key is to identify where the power source is located.
When installing 4-way switches simply install them between the wiring of the two three way switches. You may install as many 4-way switches as you wish as long as the wiring is carried through from switch to switch. Confusion is typically caused from seeing white wires and thinking they are neutrals when they may not be, so be sure to test the wires or trace them out to be user. The electrical code requires that when a white wire is used for switching to be colored with black electrical tape or with a black marker, however this was not always done, especially with older home wiring.
