A typical bed skirt consists of one giant piece of decking fabric and finish fabric hanging off of its three sides. There are many problems with construction of this kind. First, the dust ruffle placement is on top of the box spring(s) and between the mattress. This creates shifting whenever you change the sheets or make the bed. The result is a messy looking bed on a daily basis. Typically, a purchased dust ruffle won't give you the length you need to reach all the way to the floor - giving dust an opportunity to build up underneath the bed. It also won't allow you store anything underneath the bed because everyone will see it. Last, if you run your bed skirt over the top of the box spring, you have to cover up the bed rails (that are usually decorative) with an ill-fitting piece of fabric.
