VP Sports Marketing (Fox Deportes)

WHAT YOU DO: Work with radio stations, social media platforms, creative agencies, and sports organizations to make your television network, website, and social media pages THE destination point for your target audience.
EDUCATION: A bachelor's degree is essential for an entry-level position in marketing. Many students choose a traditional business or communication-related major (advertising, communications), but social science majors such as psychology and anthropology can also be useful. Higher-level positions often require additional business knowledge, so an MBA can really set you apart as a job candidate.
USEFUL SKILLS: You'll be working with a team to discuss marketing strategies, so communication skills, presentation skills, and the ability to persuade are all essential. Equally important are quantitative skills (to interpret ratings information, campaign metrics, etc), and skills that will help you connect with a multicultural audience -- in the case of sports marketing, this includes social media skills, the ability to speak Spanish, and an understanding of sports.
HOW TO GET IN: Try to build a relationship with anyone in the in the sports or media industry and get a better understanding of what they do. Look for internships, and remember it's very important to have something to discuss during formal interviews. It's not enough to say you want to work in sports because you're a fan; learn the business behind sports and who watches them.
CAREER PATH: Even if you start working for a team in ticket sales, make sure to look & see what else you can do to gain additional skills. Stay involved in anything you can be a part of, like social media outreach, working with the PR department, working with the team selling sponsorships, etc. Then try for an entry-level job in the marketing department at a network or company, where you'll work with a team on analyzing ad campaigns. The next step is to work on developing campaigns with a team of your own. You may focus on a specific sport or group of viewers, and if your marketing is successful enough, you could become a media executive of an entire channel or network.
PAYBACK: Typical salary for a VP of marketing in media is around $130K.
DOWNSIDES: The sports industry is very competitive and entry-level positions pay very poorly.
NETWORKING: Any team and league websites (including minor league teams) and any broadcasters involved with sports (NFL Network, FOX Sports, Telemundo, Time Warner Cable, etc.)
