Why Twins Aren’t Always the Same Size

Have you ever wondered why one twin can be much bigger than the other?

Twins do not always share the same growth conditions during pregnancy. Differences in placental size, placental blood flow, cord insertion, or how a shared placenta is divided can all affect how much oxygen and nutrition each baby receives. In some identical twins, abnormal blood vessel connections within a shared placenta can create an imbalance called twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. In fraternal twins, genetics can also contribute to differences in size.
