Rerum Novarum: On Capital and Labor by Pope Leo XIII

This Encyclical on the Rights and Duties of Capital and Labor by Pope Leo XIII given in May 1891 addressed the conditions of the working class. It rejected both socialism and unrestricted capitalism, and encouraged a middle way that took into account the inherent human dignity of workers and affirmed the right to private property while warning the rich what Jesus Christ had already warned, that riches were an obstacle to heaven of which we must make an account before the Supreme Judge.
