Suspect Who Allegedly Sought To Assassinate Trump Faces Federal Gun Charges: Explained

Ryan Routh, the man who the FBI says targeted former President Donald Trump in “what appears to be an attempted assassination ” at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, made his first appearance in federal court Monday. Terry Spencer of the Associated Press explains Monday's development.

Routh faces two federal gun charges. Court documents also highlight possible penalties Routh could face if convicted.

The charge of possessing a firearm despite a prior felony conviction carries a possible 15-year sentence, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release.
