Matthew 6:9-13

Sunday Morning: The Lord’s Prayer: Our Father

Introduction: One of the prominent themes in the message of Jesus to His disciples is the concept of God as our Father in heaven (15x in OT; 42x in Matt; 5x in Mk; 19x in Lk; 115x in Jn). In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus is teaching on prayer and gives us a model to show us how to pray not what to pray. The Lord’s Prayer is not a magic mantra – it provides us with an outline of things that Jesus wants to be priorities in our prayer lives. There is a “wrong” way to pray (Matt 6:5-8); let’s learn the “right” way from Jesus!

It is very important to notice how we are to begin in prayer:
Our Father – God is the Creator of all, but the Father of all who believe on Jesus. It is unfair to project onto God the failures of our earthly fathers. Genuine prayer is directed to the Father who loves us and will do only the “best” for us (Matt 7:7-11; Lk 11:5-13; Rom 8:28).

1) Not everyone can call God his or her heavenly Father (Jn 8:44; 1Jn 3:10-14).
2) Only those who “receive” Christ know God personally as a Father (Jn 1:12-13).
3) By faith in Christ we are adopted into God’s family (Rom 8:14-17; Gal 4:4-7).
4) The plural “our” shows us that such prayer is a corporate privilege. Your prayers in private and those of the church come before God as a spiritual family (1Cor 12:13; Gal 6:10; Eph 3:15).

Conclusion: To begin prayer in this way means to acknowledge God’s goodness and His love for you. Thank God that you are His child, adopted into His family. Praise Him for such grace and mercy in every prayer.
