60 Series Dual Battery & 12V Upgrade - The Bush Company

We love our 4WDs at The Bush Company, especially the classics, so a chance to give this 60 Series Landcruiser some much needed attention along with an awesome dual battery touring setup was right up our street. Electrics, heat & vibration are not the best of mates, so why put a dual battery setup in the engine bay of your 4WD? In our own experience many DC/DC chargers and other electronics associated with dual battery systems (including the batteries) can suffer significant reductions in performance and even life-span as a result of exposure to the high temperatures found in engine bays.

In the case of this 60 Series Landcruiser, the turbo had recently been reconditioned and hi-flowed which had resulted in an increase temp in the engine bay as the Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGT) had increased. The existing Redarc DC/DC charger and the rest of the dual battery setup was located close to the turbo which may explain why the owner was experiencing issues with the dual battery not charging correctly. The owner also wanted a more integrated solution for solar panels which the existing redarc charger could not handle.

The solution here involved relocating the whole dual battery system to the rear cargo area of the vehicle in a custom built battery box. We also added an additional AGM battery, making a total of 270 amps, which provides roughly 130 amps of usable power before the batteries would require a charge. For the DC/DC charger we used a HCdp 30amp charger which has the added benefit of a 7 amp bypass function allowing the fridge to be powered directly from the alternator when the engine is on, enabling the batteries to charge more effectively. This charge also has a built in 360W MPPC solar regulator so the solar panels can be plugged straight in. On the custom battery box we installed two new 12V Cig sockets and a double USB charging socket, as well as BM-1 battery/charging monitor to provide the owner with information on power usage and remaining power.

We also identified that the existing 50amp alternator that has been in the vehicle for nearly 30 years was no longer performing at full capacity, so the owner chose to upgrade the alternator to a new 80 amp unit. The rest of the work in this install involved relocating the existing 12 gang fuse box from the passenger kick panel to the new power panel at the rear, which required identifying and rewiring many of the accessories that the owner had installed.
