Dan Smith the Village Painter

Dan Smith comes from a long line of artists. His great-grandfather was a professional artist, illustrator and map maker and his mother enjoyed making art as long as he can remember. Their artworks and their interest in art making, as well as learning and thinking about artists and the visual arts were part of his upbringing.

He earned a BFA in painting from East Carolina University and a MFA in painting from the University of South Carolina and taught studio art and humanities at colleges and universities in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. He has exhibited mainly throughout the Southeast. His personal experiences, education, and environments have provided encouragement, support and challenges for an on-going personal art-making journey.
