Reality TV & The Glamorous Lies it Sells | Salari
Correction: at one point in the video I mention how Frenchie Davis was disqualified from American Idol by the Disney owned network, ABC. During the time Frenchie appeared on the show, American Idol was a Fox owned property and was later acquired by ABC. Throughout the years, Fox has also been called out for their hypocrisy in their programming; in particular the kind of content seen on Fox (the entertainment network) conflicting with the extremely conservative views of Fox News. Despite the show airing on Fox, it seems the network decided to resort to family friendly values and ejected Frenchie from the competition, and later decided to keep Antonella Barba, who appeared four years later, a decision which also made by Fox.
I sincerely apologize for this oversight, and I promise to be more thorough with my research in the future.
Reality TV contests love to sell you the idea that the road to stardom is simplistic and smooth, they use the commonly established narrative of rags to riches and turn real people into stories, they utilize the backstories and pain of the contestants and turn them into a tool to turn them into a character. They sells the idea that fame and success is guaranteed upon winning, but on most occasions this isn't the case. For every Carrie Underwood or Harry Styles, there's dozens of names we've forgotten, and shows like American Idol, X Factor, America's Got Talent and others are more than fine with that happening. Let's explore the glamorous lies of reality TV contests
