Qi2 — Apple gives MagSafe to Android, kinda!

Qi2, the next-generation inductive charging standard for phones, earbuds, watches, and more, has just been announced by the Wireless Power Consortium.

Qi2 — which gets its name from the mandarin pronunciation of the Chinese symbol for breath and life, adds magnets, which makes it easier to pop a device onto a pad, and way more likely it’ll stay on the pad, in proper alignment, increasing efficiency and hopefully, eventually, charging speed as well.

Now, if that sounds a lot like Palm’s OG TouchStone, well RIP… Pre… but if it also sounds a lot like Apple’s MagSafe, that’s because Apple provided the basis for the Qi2 standard. Probably in an effort to improve ubiquity which improves utility for everyone, and, you know, get ahead of the EU trying to ban magnets or some other 4D checkers move in the future.

Qi2-compatible devices should start hitting the market in late 2023, early 2024. And I can’t wait, but let me know what you think!
