Homeless, Not Hopeless: A Candid Conversation About Addiction and Failed Support Systems in BC
Today, I met with two brave and honest individuals who are navigating the harsh realities of addiction, homelessness, and survival. Both are currently on opioid replacement therapy while still struggling with active street drug use. Recently, they were evicted from a single-room occupancy unit managed by the Thyra Women’s Housing Resource Society — a facility meant to support people facing addiction and mental health challenges.
Their stories are raw, emotional, and deeply human. One man was moved to tears as he described feeling trapped in a vicious cycle he can’t seem to escape. The woman, despite having a loving and supportive family waiting for her on the outside, spoke with heartbreaking honesty about her deep frustration with her addiction and the limited real options available to help her get sober.
It’s clear from their experiences — and from so many others I’ve spoken to — that there are virtually no positive or effective alternatives within the current housing system that truly support recovery. These programs are supposed to help people rebuild, yet too often, they fall short or even contribute to further instability.
Addiction is no joke. And while being homeless doesn’t mean being hopeless, it does often mean being left behind by the very systems that are supposed to help.
Let their voices be heard. Let their stories open eyes and inspire change.
