We have built and designed many kitchens over the years for our clients. And I've started to notice that the modern farmhouse look in a kitchen has become increasingly popular.

I guess because it's a beautiful fusion of old and new. They are typically very functional and modern. Yet they're slightly more nostalgia-inducing and referencing back to the more traditional style of kitchen and often use that warmth and charm.

That's why I made these 5 suggestions for things to include in your new kitchen or kitchen renovation/makeover to create the look of a modern farmhouse kitchen.

1:04 Shaker doors: The first thing you should aim to include is a shaker style cabinet door. The modern shaker doors are a beautiful combination of old and new. They have the recessed inner panels like a traditional kitchen. Yet these days they are built more with a square detail without the colonial fussy details of a traditional kitchen.

1:28 Open storage: This seems to be something that's fairly typical in a modern farmhouse kitchen. In modern kitchens, you always see overhead cupboards with the doors on front and that's more of a clean-lined modern look. But modern farmhouses tend to sometimes opt for open shelves. And this is a great opportunity to have on display things that are both beautiful and useful. Maybe things like some mugs or some beautiful bowls or plates. Maybe a vintage painting as well and that is just one way you can bring in some of that warmth and charm into your kitchen.

2:02 Fittings and fixtures: Here is an opportunity to bring in some more industrial or retro or vintage or traditional styles. So some examples are your sink. A popular one is the farmhouse style of the sink with the exposed front apron. Another one would be your pendant lights or any of your lights in your kitchen.

Perhaps some decorative wall sconces or some more vintage or retro style pendants over your kitchen island. Even your tap fitting could be a little bit more old-fashioned or more nostalgic.

2:56 Add Rustic or Recycled or Vintage Elements: Include some rustic may be recycled or vintage pieces in your kitchen. So a common one is to include a barn door. I've actually used a recycled old door and converted it into the pantry barn door or we've actually built some produce drawers for your onions and potatoes for example.

We built them using some old recycled oak and I think that. This just adds a really unique and warm touch. To a modern farmhouse kitchen.

3:38 Decor and Styling: How you actually style your kitchen? So consider things like foliage produce you know have some fruit on display, timber cutting boards.
Maybe some vintage artifacts or a family heirloom. Wire baskets have your shopping list on display or some upcycled barstools. Here you can get really creative even. If you've got a more modern kitchen to start with.
