Carlsen attacks Niemann but fails

Featured is the rapid game between Magnus Carlsen and Hans Niemann from the 2022 FTX Crypto Cup. Carlsen opts for the Rossolimo Attack, and soon thereafter Niemann acquires the bishop pair, a poorer structure, and an uncastled king. Carlsen’s 16th move created a significant structural weakness in his own camp that he was unable to remedy. Niemann’s reply allowed him to swiftly direct 4 pieces on Carlsen’s backward d-pawn, which forced him to go on the defensive. The level of play by Niemann was precise throughout, and in the eyes of Stockfish 15.1 it registered a 97% accuracy vs Carlsen’s 91% accuracy. Overall, this game acts as an excellent model for black against the Rossolimo Attack. Shortly after the game’s conclusion, Niemann said of it “The chess speaks for itself.”
