If dating apps calculated the distance between you and every other user, their servers would crash instantly (O(N) complexity).

Instead, apps like Bumble and Hinge use Google S2 Geometry.

1. They project the Earth onto a Cube.
2. They divide the cube into tiny grid squares (Quadtrees).
3. Your location becomes a simple number (Cell ID).

The database doesn't do geometry. It just looks for people standing in the same box as you.
